Northern Lights Public Schools held its 2nd Annual Trades and Industry Carnival on May 29, 2019 at the Trades Exposure Centre in Bonnyville, Alberta. The focus of the event was on connecting Indigenous students with opportunities in the trades and post-secondary training. Approximately 240 high school students from NLPS and surrounding school jurisdictions attended the event, which featured displays, presentations, and interactive activities from 13 local companies and post-secondary institutions.
Set up like a carnival, each “booth” featured an activity that students would complete. This could be trades-related, like trying out welding, scaffolding, or going up in a lift, or it could be a fun game of some sort. The goal was to have the students interact with the representatives and get a conversation going about the many opportunities available to students and what they may want to pursue in the future.
